Sunday Squeeze #3

January 22, 2012

Before I start with my new Sunday Squeeze, I would like to apologize for the lack of updates.  I plan to return to posting regular columns again this week.  It’s been a difficult month after losing my job and didn’t realize how much it affected me emotionally.

Nothing compares to the joy of seeing your child happy.  Seeing those memories captured on film, or a computer file, helps us keep those great memories throughout our lives.  My daughter had just met with Chip n Dale at the Epcot Character Spot.  It was in the days before Samantha Brown told people about this little treasure.  We used to be able to meet all the headliner characters with little or no wait throughout the day!

Debbie was so excited to finally get to meet Chip n Dale that she could barely contain herself.  She was jumping and dancing in circles and singing.  We had met Mickey, Minnie and Donald and it was time to finally meet the chipmunks.  They played with her and jumped and danced.  After getting their autograph and photo with her little friend, I took this photo of her as she completed the meet and greet.  Words can’t describe the joy she expressed.

What about you?  Do you have moments you’d like to share?

Next week a Friend of the Site (FOS) Reto will be sharing a moment he had with his favorite character Baloo!

Character rumors – Merida, Swampy and Leapers

Update:  Merida WILL be Pixar’s first face character.  Cast Members have already be test fitted for the role.

Princess Merida
Princess Merida from the new Pixar movie “Brave” is supposed to begin making appearances in May.  It is believed that she will meet in Hollywood Studios where Winnie the Pooh currently meets, but she might be moved into Fairytale Garden in Magic Kingdom.  If she is located in Magic Kingdom, Rapunzel would move to Town Square Theater with Belle being removed.  It is unclear if she will appear was Pixar’s first face character.

Eventually all the Princesses will be given a new meet space after Snow White’s Scary Adventures is gutted and transformed into Princess meet and costume shoppe.

Swampy the Alligator
I’ve read that Swampy the Alligator from the “Where’s my water?” mobile video game may “eventually” make appearances.  I had never heard of Swampy before this popped up on a web forum.  (source Drew wdwmagic)

Leap Day aka “One more Disney day.”
Disney has announced that the Magic Kingdom will be open from 6 am Feb 29th until 6 am Mar 1.  I’m not really sure why they didn’t just open from midnight to midnight to allow people to say that they spent Leap Day in the Magic Kingdom or Disneyland, but I suspect it’s so they can show the park opening on Eastern television stations.

I’ve heard that the Magic Kingdom will offer “special entertainment” and that characters would be out during the night hours.  I’m taking a wait-and-see approach to this information.  I was sooooooo disappointed by Disney’s lack of 40th celebration.  I sure hope they bring out some rare characters, run ALL the main street vehicles and provide some extra entertainment!

Russell & Dug
I’ve heard that Russell and Dug are set to go back into wilderness exploration in a couple of days.  If that happens, they will no longer be available for meet and greets at WDW.

Retired characters
On my recent vacation to WDW, I asked an entertainment manager why Jiminy, Lilo, Stitch and Terk are retired from Animal Kingdom and why all the small entertainment is dissappearing.  The unnamed manager told me:  “The characters are retired to allow us to introduce the Tusker House character lunch experience.”  I responded, “That makes no sense, the people eating lunch pay for the characters.”  He stated, “It still has to come from entertainment’s budget for the next quarter, so we had to make some cuts.”  Sounds less like cost cutting and more like profit increases to me!

The Sunday Squeeze #2 – The Ariel Fiasco

The year was 2006.  My son was 7 years old and not very interested in girls at the time.  Okay, almost any female not named “Momma” was yuckie at the time.  My daughter wanted badly to complete her collection of princess autographs on her hat, so we talked him into meeting with her.  It started out innocently enough.  Ariel asked where we had swum in from and the kids laughed and joked with her.  Ariel offered my son a hug.  Then it went wrong, very, very wrong!
Ariel, in her typical gentile demeanor leaned over to give him a kiss on the cheek.  He attempted to lean away and she planted a good one on him!

He was not a happy camper! I had to promise him a Dole Whip to allow me to take the first photo. He still hates the photo and isn’t too fond of the memory, but it’s pretty special to us. He wiped the lipstick off his cheek as quickly as possible. I bought the Dole Whip as soon as we could reach Adventureland and we were off to ride Pirates of the Caribbean together!

Every Sunday I’ll post a new photo of a great hug moment with a character and a description of what was taking place at that time.

The Sunday Squeeze #1 – Ahhh Stitch!

My youngest daughter, who was 2 at the time, was on her first trip to Walt Disney World with us. I’ve always been a bit of a commando style tourist, trying to take in every moment possible, so I had probably exhausted my daughter by mid-afternoon. My daughter was excited to meet Stitch in the old Timekeeper building. The line took about 10 minutes because the Incredibles were at the end of the same line. With my wife holding her in her arms, my daughter fell asleep in the line.  When it was time to meet Stitch he didn’t want to wake her. He instructed us to pose as though we all were sleeping on the floor. When we stood up to say goodbye; she awoke and reached her arms toward Stich. My wife lifted her up to meet him and with the softest, sweetest voice she said, “Ahhhh Stitch!” and proceeded to kiss him on the nose. It was a very endearing moment for us all. Too bad she only knows of it from the photo.
