I normally do the rides and attractions during the day and save the party time for characters, Celebrate the Season Show, A Totally Tomorrowland Christmas Show,  Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade  and Holiday Wishes.

If you choose to ride, you’ll find all the lines at a minimum except Peter Pan and Space Mountain.  Most are usually walk-on, but that is often the same during the day of a party as well.

Liberty Tree Tavern and The Crystal Palace are also open as Table Service options, but I don’t recommend using your valuable touring time on a sit down meal.  You’re paying almost $15.00 per hour per person, why waste that on a meal that you can easily schedule earlier in the day?

I choose to grab some grub from Pecos Bill about 5:30pm and take it with me to the line for the Seven Dwarves.  I want to be among the first in line so I have the full party to do everything else.  There are also carts available for snacks if you choose that option or just fill up on chocolate!

MTbannerMickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party Shows

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party Entertainment includes Celebrate the Season, A Totally Tomorrowland Christmas,  Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade  and Holiday Wishes, along with character meet and greets and free cookies!  The dance parties offer you an opportunity to dance the night away with your favorite character and are available throughout the party.   I recommend visiting Celebrate the Season, A Totally Tomorrowland Christmas and the dance parties later into the night in order to make the most of your limited time.

Cinderella Castle Dream Lighting

Cinderella Castle Dream Lighting is presented at 6:15pm every night from early November through New Year’s, the Castle is awash in over 200,000 glimmering lightcicles.  It’s a great site to behold and there’s a short show that ties it all together involving the Fairy Godmother and Cinderella  Elsa!  You can see this show ANY holiday season night, so save it for a different night and get in line to meet the Dwarves!Cinderella Castle, Magic Kingdom, Walt Disney World, Christmas Lights

Holiday Wishes Fireworks

IMG_2806Holiday Wishes is a fantastic fireworks show. It combines pyrotechnics and festive holiday music and even has a 180 degree finale of vibrant explosions that will really shake you. It’s a pleasant mixture of reds and greens presented with number pyro giftboxs.  Be sure to stand somewhere behind the Walt and Mickey statue. If you get too close, you’ll miss some of the timed fireworks. If you get too far away, you won’t be able to see the projections upon the castle. I recommend standing somewhere between Casey’s Corner and the Tip Board on Main Street for the best view. Arrive 15-30 minutes early for the best locations.

Once Upon a Christmastime Parade

Walt Disney World, Magic Kingdom, Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party, Mickey's Once Upon a Christmastime ParadeA terrific and very long Christmas parade!  During the parade many great characters parade past, but the highlights are the marching Toy Soldiers who actually play their instruments and jolly ole Saint Nick. I recommend attending the second parade. You won’t have to secure a spot as early. The best spots for the first parade are usually taken 60 minutes early and the same spots could be found for the second parade 15-30 minutes early. The “Kringle Krew” will appear along Main Street prior to each parade performance to dance with willing guests and get them into the spirit of the season.

Celebrate the Season Show

Celebrate the Season Walt Disney WorldCelebrate the Season Show is a vibrant, upbeat, Mickey celebration of Christmas.  “Come join the joyous celebration” opens the show, then dancers, horses, teddy bears and reindeer sing about Santa coming to visit which leads Goofy to come visit.  There’s also a whacky Nutcracker Suite knock-off with Donald.  It’s a fun show that takes about 20 minutes.  Watch it later in the night when no one is around.

A Totally Tomorrowland Christmas Show

Walt Disney World, Magic Kingdom, Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party, A Totally Tomorrowland ChristmasA Totally Tomorrowland Christmas Show is like no other Christmas celebration.  Stitch doesn’t understand the meaning of Christmas and it takes Buzz and Mike Wazowski to keep him from laser blasting Santa out of the sky.  It’s a hokey, but fun show that includes a Michael Jackson style dance number.  It takes about 20 minutes and there’s no crowd for the final show of the night!  It’s a great way to close the night.

 The Rusty Cutlass Band

The Rusty Cutlass Band will appear periodically during the party in Adventureland.

Know who you want to see!

New 2014 Map coming soon!

Walt Disney World, Magic Kingdom, Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party, Characters, Map

NOTE:  Look for Mary Poppins, Bert and Penguin for 2013 near the Prince Charming Carousel!  Wendell and Shaker will join Big Al and Liverlips.  Daisy and Donald will join Scrooge in Storybook Circus.  Minnie will move to Fantasyland Castle Wall.

It’s important that your family makes a plan of the things they wish to experience during the party so they don’t spend their time wandering around the park. When it comes to characters you should pick the ones you find have the greatest importance. To some people, meeting with the 7 Dwarves will rank high, while others may wish to see Captain Jack Sparrow and another family may want to visit with every Prince at the party. Know who you want to see and set a reasonable goal. It’s not impossible to meet every character, but you won’t have time for any other element of the party to attempt this.

HIGHEST PRIORITY CHARACTERS:

These characters may have lines of one hour or more or take multiple meets to see them all

Dwarfs:

7 Dwarves MNSSHP 2012

If you wish to meet the 7 Dwarves, (Snow White doesn’t meet with them, she meets with her Prince in Town Square Theater) you’ll want to line up no later than 6:15 pm. The line for the Dwarves actually begins to form at 5:30-6:00 pm. Why would I recommend spending all that time in line? Well, if you don’t line up early, you’ll still be in that line later and you’ll miss precious party time. By lining up early, you’ll have the full 5 hours to do the other things you wish during the actual party.

Santa Claus

We met Santa in the Magic Kingdom December 2009
Santa in the Magic Kingdom December 2009

Santa meets next to City Hall and creates very long lines.  However, you can meet him during the day in the same location or in Epcot with Mrs. Claus and save yourself a lot of waiting at the party.

Captain Jack Sparrow:

Jack Sparrow at Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party 2012
Jack Sparrow at Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party 2012

Captain Jack is very popular, but he also tend to be fashionably late. I stood in line one night hoping he’d arrive at 7:00 pm sharp only to find out later that he wouldn’t arrive until after 8:00 pm. I recommend going to see him immediately after the SECOND Once Upon a Christmastime Parade. They disband his line for parades, so many people don’t want to wait twice.

Princesses with their Princes:

Flynn and Rapunzel at Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party 2012
Flynn and Rapunzel at Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party 2012

If the Dwarfs aren’t your highest priority, you may wish to line up for these Lords and Ladies early. You’ll find Aurora with Prince Phillip, Snow White and her Prince and Rapunzel with Flynn Rider.  I’ve found the line typically begins to form around 6:30 and begins right at 7:00. Flynn Rider is VERY popular and VERY chatty, so even with all the Disney Magic, he still builds a long line. If you don’t wish to arrive early, come back around 11:00pm or right after the second parade for the shortest waits.

MODERATE PRIORITY CHARACTERS

Aladdin & Abu, Jasmine & Genie

Genie and Jasmine at Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party - September 2012
Genie and Jasmine at Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party – September 2012

Aladdin was typically meeting with Abu and Jasmine with Genie. There were one or two sets around parade times some nights where Abu and Genie met together. The lines for these characters were typically about 20-30 minutes. You may line up for one set and actually meet the other set.

Minnie Mouse

Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party 2012
Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party 2012

Minnie has moved to the Fantasyland Wall.  Minnie has moved out of the Town Square Theater and will now meet by the Fantasyland Castle Wall for 2013.

Winnie the Pooh, Eeyore, Tigger and Piglet

Winnie the Pooh Dec 2012 (4)

This picture is from Animal Kingdom, but the party has all four of the Pooh characters together in one meet. Each are wearing a festive scarf like the one above.  They typically have a 30 minute wait and often see their line cut before they even arrive for the next set. Be sure to ask the Cast Member about the schedule.

Donald, Daisy & Scrooge McDuck

Scrooge McDuck at Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party 2012
Scrooge McDuck at Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party 2012

Scrooge McDuck met in Fantasyland next to Storybook Treats last year, but he will move to Storybook Circus and be joined with Daisy and Donald who met inside Pete’s Silly Sideshow last year.

LOWEST PRIORITY CHARACTERS

Dance Parties

Stitch at Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party 2012
Stitch at Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party 2012

There’s really no reason to arrive early for either Dance Party. Just walk right in, dance until you’re tired and take some photos. You can ask a Cast Member what time a certain character will appear. We often end the night at one of the dance parties.

Country Bears

LIverlips, Mickeys Very Merry Christmas Party, Magic Kingdom, characters
Liverlips at Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party 2005

Big Al and Liverlips will again be joined by Wendell and Shaker for 2013 parties.  They appeared randomly in Frontierland.  I never saw a long line to meet these characters.

VISIT DURING THE DAY CHARACTERS

It’s my opinion that I don’t waste my precious and expensive party time visiting characters that I could easily see during the day in the same costuming. Perhaps you only have one day at Walt Disney World or you aren’t planning to be in the Magic Kingdom any mornings, in those cases it would make sense to visit these characters if they are important to you. Those who meet in the exact same costume during the day include:

  • Ariel
  • Merida
  • Mickey Mouse – “Talking”
  • Peter Pan & Wendy
  • Phineas and Ferb – meet them in Hollywood Studios.
  • Tiana & Naveen
  • Tinker Bell

1.  You can enter early!

The party festivities officially begin at 7pm sharp, but guests with a ticket to the party may enter using that ticket as early as 4:00pm.  If you are using a regular Magic Way Ticket, you do NOT need to exit the park.  There are locations that will allow you to scan your party ticket and receive your wristband while still in the park after 4pm.  Some guests choose to relax at their resort and save a day on their park tickets.  If you enter at 4:00, you might want to take in some headliner rides before the party starts.

Castle Lighting (2)

2.  Am I forced to leave the Magic Kingdom if I don’t have ticket?

Well, no one is going to grab your arm and pull you out, but once the party begins at 7pm, the Cast Members begin doing a sweep looking for those who don’t have wristbands.  If you forgot to get your wristband, just go to the nearest station.  If you wish to stay and attend the party, you can purchase a ticket at the front of the park, if it isn’t sold out.

3.  I have dining reservations for 6:45 at Liberty Tree Tavern, can I eat, watch the parade and stay around?

NOPE.  Once your meal is completed at a Table Service restaurant, you’ll be kindly escorted all the way to the front gate by and super nice Cast Member who will kindly remind you that you can purchase a ticket and stay around if you wish!

Tomorrowland Christmas (1)

4.  Make sure the little ones get an afternoon nap.

You feel like you can get them to soldier-on from 6:00am wake up to midnight, but you’re wrong.  Your kids will become grumpy, demanding and even combative because they are tired!  As a matter of fact, you probably will too!  Don’t try to squeeze out every dollar of your vacation, get some rest!.

Mickey's Once Upon a Christmastime Parade

5.  Don’t waste your precious party time.

You only get 5 hours of actual party time (8 hours total), so don’t waste that $15.00 per hour per person eating Table Service, riding things you can do anytime or waiting in line for cookies and hot cocoa.  Get in line for 7 Dwarves or Princesses early!  The line is usually pretty long for Dwarves by 6:15pm and the Princess with Prince line usually forms around 6:30pm.

Mickey's Once Upon a Christmastime Parade

6.  Be prepared for cold weather!

It’s Florida, so you may feel safe with the weather forecast.  My daughter and I attended the final party near Christmas last year and we were FREEZING.  We had to purchase additional outer wear because it was so cold.  The forecast low was 50 degrees, but it felt like the frozen tundra.  Pack a coat in December, you might need it.

Mickey's Once Upon a Christmastime Parade

7.  Bring a poncho

It has rained on at least half the parties I’ve attended.  It’s often an hour or less, so they continue with the party.  On rare occasions that both parades are cancelled, guest services may offer a refund or free park ticket.  Be prepared for the fall monsoons, it is hurricane season in Florida during the early parties.

8.  Watch the parade and fireworks.

These are two of the best entertainment options at Walt Disney World.  I recommend seeing the SECOND parade because the crowds are lighter and view the fireworks between Casey’s Corner and the Tip Board on Main Street for the best view.  The best spots always go early for these events.  The schedules are on the Show schedule above.

Mickey's Once Upon a Christmastime Parade

9.  Check out the Castle and Tomorrowland Shows

Both shows are well produced.  The Castle show presents a more traditional Christmas type show, while the Tomorrowland version is far more comedic.

Tomorrowland Christmas (2)

10.  Dance the night away with Woody, Jessie & Bullseye or Stitch, Goofy, Pluto and Chip n Dale.

There are two great dance parties that allow you to dance with some of your favorite characters.  They don’t sign autographs, but they are a lot of fun and may even pose for a photo.

A sold out Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party – our experience

My daughter had an orchestra concert at Downtown Disney, so we planned to stick around a few days longer to take in all the exciting Christmas activities at the resorts and parks.  We had purchased our ticket to the final Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party of the year far in advance and fully aware it would become a sell-out.  I’ve attended other sell-out parties at Disney World in the past, but this one was just packed with people.  It felt like a very busy day in the park.  We know that a good plan always beats the crowds though, so we pre-planned our important activities.

Continue reading A sold out Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party – our experience

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party planning outline

NOTE:  Even though the party events don’t start until 7:00 PM, you can enter the Magic Kingdom with your party ticket as early as 4:00 pm.

NOTE:  The Castle Dream Lighting show takes place every night from November 9 through New Year.

I’ve placed the shows in the order of the times they appear to make it easier for you to make your schedule. We usually visit Animal Kingdom during the day, leave about 1:00 pm and take a nap. We arrive at the Magic Kingdom around 6:00 pm to avoid the crowds and stake out our first character meets. I find the second parade much easier to find a good spot, but it’s also quite late for some children who haven’t taken that nap I mentioned. The best location to view the parade is either near the Hall of Presidents or in the Castle Hub. It’s because the floats make a big turn in those locations, causing them to slow down.  I prefer to watch fireworks on Main St very near the tip board by Casey’s Corner.

If meeting the 7 Dwarves (photo only, no autographs), Jack Sparrow or Rapunzel  is important to your family, be sure to get in line early. People begin lining up at 6:00 pm and characters don’t begin meets until 7:00 pm. The line for the Dwarves, Jack Sparrow and Rapunzel with Flynn were all quite long in 2011. Jack’s line did let up some by 11:00 pm, but the Dwarves and Rapunzel didn’t. Santa meets at the Flag Pole next to City Hall and attracts quite a crowd of families posing for their Christmas card photos.  There is a backdrop with Santa, so you don’t get a photo of the castle behind him.

There are usually no lines for attractions on the night I visited and you can just walk up to any serving location to receive free cookies, apple slices, hot cocoa or apple juice.   Feel free to eat as many cookies as you like, they are quite expensive 🙂

Don’t be late for the Castle Lighting.  It’s a short show, but quite impressive to watch the castle go from dark to brightly lit with more than 250,000 twinkling ligths.  The parade is fun as it includes dancing reindeer, gingerbread and a visit from Santa!  The firework show is festive Disney Christmas at its best.  People tend to leave the Christmas parties even earlier then the Halloween Parties and lines for many characters lessen after the fireworks.

Purchase your tickets here.
